Jefferson Co. Commission Splits Over Sewer Issue
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Jefferson County commissioners were split 3-2 Tuesday to ask the Governor to call a special session over the $3.2 billion sewer debt crisis.

Governor Riley told a Birmingham TV station (WBRC) that he would not waste taxpayer dollars on a special session if commissioners weren't together on a plan to deal with the bond crisis.

But Commission President Bettye Fine Collins said she's not deterred and will hold meetings with state lawmakers to seek support for the special session.

Commissioners Jim Carns and Bobby Humphryes both voted against the plan and said they would hold separate town hall forums in their district to discuss the bond crisis.

A public hearing on the plan supported by Commissioners Collins, Sheila Smoot and George Bowman will be held Friday at Samford University's Wright Hall.
