Siegelman Attorney: Probe Justice Dept Conduct
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - An attorney for former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman has urged a Justice Department watchdog office to look into several areas as it probes whether his prosecution was politically motivated.

Siegelman's chief attorney, Vince Kilborn, has sent a letter to the department's Office of Professional Responsibility pointing to areas that ``deserve deep inquiry.'' One of those areas is the role of U.S. Attorney Leura Canary of Montgomery, who recused herself in 2002 after the investigation of the Democratic governor had begun.

Canary's husband, Bill Canary, has been a Republican Party operative with ties to former White House political aide Karl Rove and Alabama's GOP Gov. Bob Riley.
