Riley To Name New Jefferson County DA
(2008-07-25)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Gov. Bob Riley said he will appoint a new chief prosecutor for Alabama's most populous county.

Jefferson County District Attorney David Barber is stepping down, so Riley said Friday he would name a replacement by Sept. 1.

Barber has been the chief state prosecutor in Birmingham since 1984. He will turn 63 in two weeks and said he is resigning partly for family reasons.

Barber was last re-elected in 2004 to a six-year term that ends in 2010. He was first elected as a Democrat but switched to the Republican Party in 1997.
