Oil Spill Diverts Some Orleans Ships To Mobile
(2008-07-25)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The massive oil spill on the Mississippi River has forced some ship traffic to change course to Mobile, including the Carnival cruise ship Fantasy.

Carnival officials say the voyage of the 2,056-passenger Fantasy will end at Mobile on Saturday, instead of its regular homeport of New Orleans. It will also depart from Mobile. Buses will be provided to take passengers to and from New Orleans.

Alabama port officials say the container ship Rome Express has also been diverted from New Orleans to Mobile to unload.

The Coast Guard reopened the Mississippi to traffic Friday, but it could be days before all of the ships idled by the spill are cleared. A 100-mile stretch of the river has been shut down since Wednesday, when a barge split open in a collision with the Liberian-flagged tanker Tintomara.
