Leaders Stress Need for Statewide Water Strategy
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Alabama businesses, farmers and water systems continue to struggle with the effects of two years of drought despite recent rains that have brought some relief.

Officials with Dixie Pellets near Selma say water levels on the Alabama River remain so low they are only able to fill barges half full when shipping their product to the state docks in Mobile.

Two legislators held a news conference at the company's dock on the Alabama River Wednesday to stress the need for the state to create a statewide water management strategy.

Sen. Kim Bennefield of Woodland and Rep. Greg Canfield of Vestavia said the Legislature's Committee on Water Quality and Management would begin holding a series of meetings across the state next week to begin the process of writing a statewide water plan.
