Alabama
Ala. To Keep Funding Gee's Bend Ferry
The state Department of Transportation has wanted to turn the boat over to the Wilcox County Commission, but the county lacks the money to operate the ferry and doesn't expect to have the cash anytime soon.
The ferry carries people across the Alabama River between the isolated and mostly black community of Gee's Bend and Camden, the county seat. It stopped operating in 1962. The ferry resumed operating in 2006. That shaved about 40 miles of driving off the trip between Gee's Bend and Camden.
