Ala. Receives $1.7 Million Food Stamp Bonus
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Alabama is receiving a $1.7 million bonus from the federal government for having a low error rate in its food stamp program.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Alabama had one of the nation's four lowest error rates for accuracy in determining food stamp eligibility and correctness in actions to suspend or deny benefits.

Gov. Bob Riley said this is the second time in three years that the state Department of Human Resources has been recognized for its low error rate in administering the food stamp program. The department will use the $1.7 million in the food stamp program and other services.

The food stamp program served 546,000 Alabama households last year.
