Legislator's Fraud Trial Set for August
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The trial of state Rep. Sue Schmitz on fraud charges has been scheduled to begin Aug. 18 at the federal courthouse in Decatur.

The 63-year-old Schmitz is accused of taking more than $177,000 in pay from a program affiliated with Alabama's two-year colleges despite doing hardly any work.

U.S. District Judge David Proctor issued an order Friday setting the new trial date.

The trial had been scheduled for June 2, but was delayed to give Schmitz' attorneys more time to study statements made by ousted two-year-college Chancellor Roy Johnson. Johnson pleaded guilty to 15 charges in a far-reaching federal investigation of corruption in the state's two-year college system. He is expected to be a witness against Schmitz.
