State Will End Services to Elderly, Disabled
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Nearly 1,200 elderly or disabled Alabamians will lose state-funded homemaker services in August.

The state Department of Human Resources announced it must end the services because of budget constraints. Department spokesman Barry Spear says the elimination should save the department 2 million dollars in the new fiscal year.

The services help adults who are at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation remain in their homes by helping with light cleaning, cooking, errands and other routine chores.

Governor Bob Riley says he hopes faith-based and community groups will step in to help the people who are losing services.
