Officials Seek Improvement on Military Voting System
(2008-06-19)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Election officials, lawmakers and members of the military are attending a meeting at the Capitol aimed at finding a way to make it easier for military personnel stationed overseas to vote in Alabama elections.

Secretary of State Beth Chapman says systems will be demonstrated at Thursday's meeting in the Capitol auditorium that would allow service members to vote electronically from their overseas locations.

Service members currently must request that absentee ballots be sent to them. They then fill out the ballots and return them by mail to the courthouses in their home counties. It's a process that can take weeks.

Chapman says legislators will have to change Alabama laws to authorize use of such an overseas voting system.
