Agriculture Officials Back Off Peanut Adjustments
(2008-06-11)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The Agriculture Department is postponing until next year a plan to lower price supports for some peanut crops after getting an earful from the industry.

The department had planned to adjust the price guarantees for this year's crop. The move angered growers who said it could hurt their profits and who criticized the administration for proposing it just days after Congress passed a five-year farm bill.

On Monday, USDA officials told industry groups that they would hold off on the plan until 2009. The agency is arranging a meeting with industry groups June 20 to discuss the impacts.
