New Ala. Law Allows Dying Prisoners To Obtain Freedom
(2008-06-10)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Gov. Bob Riley says he will sign a bill to turn loose some terminally ill prisoners. Riley says the bill will save the state prison system as much as $8 million annually in medical costs, but it won't endanger the public because most of the inmates are already in a hospital waiting to die.

Crime victims advocate Miriam Shehane says the new law is open to abuse by future administrations because the state prison commissioner is the lone person who decides who to release.

Prison officials say the bill will apply to about 125 inmates.
