Ala. Legislature Creates Autism Council
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The Alabama Legislature has voted to create a statewide autism council to seek federal funding and coordinate state services.

The Senate gave final approval to a resolution Wednesday that sets up the Alabama Interagency Autism Coordinating Council. The resolution passed the House on Tuesday and now goes to the governor for signing.

The resolution's sponsor, Republican Rep. Cam Ward of Alabaster, has a 5-year-old daughter with autism.

Ward said the state General Fund budget approved by the Legislature earlier this month has $75,000 in funding for the council to get started. The council will include some legislators, leaders of several state agencies, parents who have children with autism, and some service providers.
