Lawmakers Say Not Given Official Notice Of Special Session
(2008-05-27)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Alabama legislators opened a special session Tuesday, but several lawmakers complained they were never given official word to come to Montgomery.

House Speaker Pro Tem Demetrius Newton of Birmingham said some past governors have sent lawmakers notices in advance concerning a special session. He said the only word he received about this week's session was what he heard from television news reports or read in newspapers.

``As of this minute the governor has not notified me that I need to be here,'' Newton said.

House Speaker Seth Hammett said there's nothing in the state constitution concerning how legislators are to be notified of a special session.

Newton said he may introduce a bill requiring the governor to give official notice of a special session.
