Birmingham Mayor, Council at Odds Over Free Bus Rides
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The Birmingham City Council has rejected Mayor Larry Langford's plan to provide free bus rides this summer.

Council members unanimously abstained from a vote on Tuesday on paying for the service, saying that killed the free rides.

But Langford says he'll proceed with his plan and the free rides will start Saturday.

The council had approved a resolution April 22nd asking the Birmingham/Jefferson Transit Authority to offer free fares for four months. But Tuesday a majority of council members said they had approved the earlier resolution supporting the plan without having all the facts.

The $863,000 needed to cover the fares would have come from the city's new 9 million dollar allocation to the transit system.
