House Passes $6.3 Billion Education Budget
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The Alabama House has approved a bare-bones education budget that provides almost $375 million less for schools and colleges than is being spent in the current fiscal year.

The House voted 103-2 Wednesday night to approve the budget that now goes to the Senate for debate.

The budget had been held up for three days by extended debate over a corporate income tax bill. The House passed the corporate tax bill Wednesday afternoon on a 78-28 vote, which cleared the way for debate on the education spending plan.

The $6.3 billion education budget cuts spending for buses, classroom supplies, textbooks, school libraries, classroom computers and for popular programs to improve performance in reading, math and science.
