(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Alabama's system of emergency preparedness and response passed a national test. Governor Riley, in a statement Monday, said the Emergency Management System recently achieved the highest accreditation standard.

Examiners with Emergency Management Accreditation Program or EMAP found Alabama in compliance with 58 standards. Riley called it a ``major milestone'' and said it demonstrates the high priority placed on protecting Alabama citizens.

Alabama is one of 16 states to achieve accreditation. It is valid for five years.
