Army Reports 44 Percent of Anniston Chemical Munitions Destroyed
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - A project manager says more than 44.2 percent of the chemical weapons stored at the Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility have now been safely destroyed.

Since March 21st, employees at the Anniston-based site have incinerated more than 1,700 155 millimeter artillery shells and almost 1,100 gallons of liquid VX nerve agent.

The latest tally mean almost 115,000 artillery shells and an estimated 71,000 gallons of liquid VX have been destroyed.

Westinghouse officials said so far workers have used the chemical weapons incinerator to get rid of all GB nerve agent stored in Anniston and about 68 percent of munitions filled with VX nerve agent.

Operations at the facility began in August 2003.
