Boats Collide Near Florence; 1 Killed
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - A tugboat pushing a barge collided in darkness with a vessel described as a yacht on the Tennessee River, killing at least one person on the pleasure boat. A search resumed Friday morning to determine if there were any other casualties.

Authorities were not immediately sure if anyone else was aboard the vessel that was struck about 8 p.m. Thursday just east of Wilson Dam.

Tennessee Valley Authority Police Commander Ray Jordan said it's unclear what size vessel was struck because searchers were unable to find any of its wreckage Thursday night.

Around 7 a.m. Friday, divers from the Florence police and Lauderdale and Colbert county emergency management agencies entered Wilson Lake waters on the river in an effort to locate the vessel that sank after being struck by an eastbound tugboat that was pushing barges.

Lauderdale EMA director George Grabryan said Coast Guard officials interviewed the tugboat crew.

Grabryan said waters were calm during the initial search Thursday night but that the darkness and increasing winds hampered search efforts.

Rescue workers brought the victim's body to shore at the boat launch at Lock Six Road in Killen. He was described as a 59-year-old man from Sheffield, but his name was not immediately released.
