Morton Supports B'ham School Closures
(2008-02-27)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Alabama school Superintendent Joe Morton said today that he supports the Birmingham school system's decision to close schools.

Morton expressed his opinion to Birmingham-area members of the state House of Representatives, who had asked to meet with Morton concerning the potential school closings.

Representative John Rogers, a Birmingham Democrat, said he wanted Morton to ease the pressure on closing schools. Rogers was visibly frustrated when Morton said he couldn't do that.

At the end of the meeting, Rogers threatened to filibuster the education budget and other matters.

Birmingham House members said today they were concerned about the constant financial trouble in the city's school system. They also said they worried about the impact school closures could have on neighborhoods.
