Black Belt Catfish Farmers Getting $3 Million in Federal Aid
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Alabama officials announced today that dozens of the state's catfish farmers will soon receive $3 million in federal disaster funds.

Alabama farmers, including those raising catfish, have been trying to stay afloat after recent hurricanes, tornadoes and two years of devastating droughts.

The money will be split between 138 catfish farmers with dollar amounts depending on the size of their operations.

State Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks made the announcement along with U.S Representative Artur Davis, who worked to make it so farmers can also get money from last year's drought along with the one in 2006.

Deputy Agriculture Commissioner Ronnie Murphy said checks for the farmers will be mailed on Monday.
