Thousands Seek Jobs at New Steel Plant
(2008-02-19)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The ThyssenKrupp steel plant being built in southwest Alabama has drawn more than 8-thousand-700 job seekers in a recent recruitment period that ended Friday.

Officials with Alabama Industrial Development Training said at least 4,000 applications were received in the past week.

AIDT, which will provide pre-employment training, said it expects to hold its first training classes in March. The German-based company could begin hiring its first workers by early summer.

Construction got underway in November on the massive $3.7 billion plant at Calvert on the border of Mobile and Washington counties.

Operations could begin in 2010, creating up to 2,700 jobs.
