Civil Rights leader Johnnie Carr Suffers Stroke, Hospitalized
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The family of Johnnie Carr said the civil rights leader was hospitalized after suffering a stroke Monday.

Carr, who is 97, is president of the Montgomery Improvement Association. She was a leader of the bus boycott that began when seamstress Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus to a white man.

Family members released a statement saying Carr was resting comfortably at Baptist Medical Center South. They asked that the public pray for her and respect the family's privacy.
