Bills to Ban PAC-to-PAC Transfers Introduced in Legislature
(2008-02-05)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Election reform bills to ban the practice of transferring campaign contributions from one political action committee to another have been introduced in the House and Senate.

Tuesday was the opening day of the 2008 session of the Legislature.

The House bill is sponsored by Representative Jeff McLaughlin of Guntersville. It calls for a total total ban on PAC-to-PAC transfers. He said his bill would give Alabama one of the toughest laws in the country on the transfer of contributions. The Senate bill by Senator Wendell Mitchell of Luverne makes an exception that would allow PACS to transfer funds to political parties.

McLaughlin said today he is considering whether to offer a compromise version of the bill when it is considered by the House Constitution and Elections Committee Wednesday morning. He said he is considering making some exceptions for parties and groups like ADC and New South without overly weakening the legislation.
