Alabama Poll: Clinton, Obama Close with Many Undecided
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - A new poll finds New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama in a close race for Alabama's Democratic presidential primary.

The Press-Register newspaper and the University of South Alabama surveyed 439 likely Democratic voters at random.

The poll, released Sunday, came up with 33 percent undecided on which candidate to support in the state's presidential primary on February 5th. Another 31 percent backed Clinton and 28 percent favored Obama. Former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina polled 8 percent.

The eventual winner will likely be the candidate who can narrow down that large undecided vote.

The large undecided factor isn't unique to Democrats.

A week ago, the Press-Register and South Alabama released a poll of likely Republican voters in Alabama. That survey showed 29 percent undecided, 25 percent for former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, and 22 percent for Arizona Senator John McCain.

The Republican survey was conducted January 7-10. The new Democratic survey was done January 7-15 and is supposed to be correct to within plus or minus 5 percent.
