State Capitol Getting New Carpet, Roof
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The 157-year-old Alabama Capitol is getting a new look from top to bottom with work set to begin on replacing the roof and installing new carpet.

The work is part of an ongoing 2.14 million dollar repair project at the historic Capitol. Other work has included replacing manufacturer-recalled sprinkler heads and repairing and repainting stucco covered columns.

Capitol Senior Restoration Artisan Bob Canter said the work is part of the periodic upkeep required since the building was restored and renovated in 1991.

Work on installing a new metal roof is expected to begin in the next few weeks and will take about a year at a cost of $1.83 million. Capitol officials said the project would not interfere with Capitol operations and would not close any part of the building to visitors or workers.

Work is expected to begin in the spring on a $128,000 project to replace the building's worn and frayed carpeting. The work will be done mostly on nights and weekends.
