(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has appointed Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Edmund M. ``Ted'' Sexton as the department's first assistant secretary for state and local law enforcement.

In the newly created position, Sexton will serve as the department's top liaison with local law enforcement agencies.

``The state and local law enforcement community is among our most critical stakeholders,'' Chertoff said Wednesday in a press release. ``This new position ... will strengthen our ties with state and local law enforcement partners and ensure that their perspective plays an even larger role in policy making.''

A University of Alabama graduate, Sexton has 28 years of experience in law enforcement, including the last 17 years as Tuscaloosa County sheriff, according to the release. Chertoff said he has demonstrated ``an impressive record of innovation and results.''
