Bill Would Establish Rainy Day Savings Account For Alabama's General Fund
(2008-01-09)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - A proposed constitutional amendment being introduced in the Alabama Legislature would require the state to establish a savings account for the state's General Fund budget.

The proposed amendment was pre-filed for the upcoming regular session by Representative Greg Wren, a Republican from Montgomery. The regular session begins February fifth.

Wren said today voters would be asked to decide on creating a ``rainy day account'' within the state's General Fund budget.

Money in the account would be used to insure state services would continue if there is not enough revenue to fund the budget. The General Fund provides money for state troopers, prisons, Medicaid and most other non-education state services.

Voters in 2002 agreed to create a similar savings account for the state education budget. Wren also sponsored that amendment.
