Recent Rain Does Little To Ease Drought Situation
(2008-01-04)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Recent rainfall helped some short term relief to the drought gripping the Southeast, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor Survey.

39 percent of Alabama, mainly the northeastern quarter of the state and surrounding areas, remain under exceptional or D-4 condition - the worst on the drought scale.

The survey was released yesterday (Thursday).

D-4 drought conditions continues to plague 16 percent of Georgia, about 35 percent less than last week. 19 percent of South Carolina, 51 percent of North Carolina, 6 percent of Virginia and 20 percent of Tennessee also remain under D-4 conditions.

Drought specialists said 2007 was the driest year on record for Alabama. Most of Alabama, southern Tennessee, northwest Georgia, and part of the Carolinas are still about 20 inches short of average rainfall.
