Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Supports Clinton
(2007-12-13)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - In a state where Democratic officeholders often distance themselves from their national party, Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks has endorsed New York Senator Hillary Clinton and taken a role in her presidential campaign.

Sparks knows he's taking a risk. After all, in last year's race for governor, Republican incumbent Bob Riley used Democrat Lucy Baxley's favorable comments about Clinton to portray Baxley as ``too liberal for Alabama'' - a tactic that helped Riley win re-election.

Despite that history, Sparks endorsed Clinton in November. Then on Monday, she named him a co-chair of Rural Americans for Hillary.

Sparks said he took the risk because endorsing early is the best way to ensure access if a candidate wins.

His endorsement of Clinton could carry more weight because he will become president of the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture in June. That means he will have a national voice when the election occurs in November.
