Birmingham Mayor Wants Overdue Parking Tickets Paid
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The city of Birmingham soon could begin seeking payment from people who have failed to pay overdue parking fines. Mayor Larry Langford said he plans to propose a new policy aimed at getting thousands of outstanding cases cleared.

He said the city is owned $6.18 million in old parking tickets. The delinquent citations cover a period from 2003 to 2007.

Under Langford's plan, citizens would have until February 15th to pay up. Those who fail to pay by the deadline would be slapped with a $500.00 penalty. But its not a done deal yet, Langford's proposal would have to be approved by the city council.

An advisory opinion issued in June by Attorney General Troy King said cities have the legal authority to treat drivers who don't pay parking tickets as criminals by fining them or sending them to jail.
