Probe Into Bishop State Nearly Completed
(2007-11-27)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Junior said Tuesday the 14-month investigation into Bishop State Community College is nearly completed.

Tyson said the probe of current Bishop State employees is over, but his office is still looking into former workers at the college.

The investigation has resulted in 26 employees - including the school's financial aid director - and their relatives being charged with theft for allegedly obtaining more than $200,000 in federal aid fraudulently.

Two-year college system Chancellor Bradley Byrne, Bishop State interim President James Lowe and Tyson held a joint news conference yesterday to talk about progress made at the college.

Bryne said an accounting firm has completed an assessment of Bishop State's financial operations and controls and will release its report next month.

The two year college is trying to revamp several programs and its image.

Bishop State has hired a Mobile-based firm to put together a campaign publicizing and building community support for the college's planned upgrades and changes.
