Troopers Issue Thousands of Tickets During Holiday

(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The Alabama Department of Public Safety's week long traffic enforcement blitz ended Sunday. Through Saturday, state troopers had issued nearly 16,000 traffic tickets.

The ''Take Back Our Highways'' campaign included more than 8,000 drivers ticketed for speeding and another 2,000 motorists cited for improper use of seat belts or child restraints.

Troopers also targeted drivers who were impaired by alcohol or drugs - figures showed at least 150 motorists were charged during with DUI during the week.

An additional 200 state troopers patrolled the state's roads and highways. They were joined by municipal police agencies and county sheriff departments.

No statistics were immediately available from Sunday, but a final tally could be known sometime Monday.

Similar traffic enforcement efforts also were conducted in Mississippi and Tennessee.
