State Voter System Meets Federal Requirements
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - A judge has ruled that Alabama finally has a statewide computerized system for voter registration that meets federal requirements.

U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins praised Governor Bob Riley for doing in 14 months what other state officials had failed to accomplish in three years of work.

The U.S. Justice Department sued Alabama last year after then-Secretary of State Nancy Worley missed the deadline for developing the computerized system.

Watkins turned over the duties to Riley last summer. Riley and his staff reported to the judge that the new system can remove the names of voters who die, and it can verify the Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers of newly registered voters.
