(2007-10-10)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Mobile County voters gave a thumbs up to $70 million in incentives for the new ThyssenKrupp steel mill. The unofficial tally showed 74 percent in favor and 25 percent against it.

The money will be taken from the county's pay-as-you-go road paving program.

The German-based company has begun the groundwork to build a $3.7 billion plant in north Mobile County. Construction on the huge facility is expected to take about 3 years.

In the District One county commission race, voters elected lawyer and Democrat Merceria Ludgood to the post. She beat Republican Juan Chastang by a margin of 80 percent to 20 percent.
