Black Widows Prompt Pool Closure
(2007-09-27)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - It was like a scene out of a horror movie. The lingering drought is blamed for the recent invasion of black widow spiders at a city pool in Madison.

The Dublin Park pool was closed to the public this week after nearly 100 of the creepy insects were killed in the past week.

Aquatic Director Chris Gareri said a pest control agent believes the drought and hot weather may have caused the spiders to seek the pool's cooler and damp environment.

He said no one was bitten. Black widows are poisonous, but the bite is normally not fatal.

Gareri said he plans to reopen the pool on Monday.
