Hunt Begins for State Christmas Tree
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Santa Claus isn't the only one who needs helpers in the holiday season.

Gov. Bob Riley is searching for someone who's willing to donate a Christmas tree - preferably a 35 to 45 foot eastern red cedar - for this year's annual lighting ceremony.

The ceremony will be held at the State Capitol on Dec. 7.

"Each year I've been governor, someone has donated a spectacular Alabama tree for this very special event," Riley said in a statement Monday. "This year, we're asking citizens to join us in the search because we haven't found one yet."

Riley said that when the tree is found, tree specialists with the state Department of Transportation will cut it down and transport it to Montgomery, where it will be placed at the top steps of the State Capitol.

Anyone with a recommendation for a tree is asked to contact the governor's office at 334-242-7100.
