Prosecutors Appeal Hyundai Ruling
(2007-09-11)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - South Korean prosecutors filed an appeal with the nation's highest court today over one aspect of an appeals court ruling last week in the case of convicted Hyundai Chairman Chung Mong-koo.

Prosecutors said they took issue with the provision that ordered Chung to do public service in the form of delivering lectures to business groups on lawful management and writing newspaper and magazine contributions on the subject.

Kim said prosecutors would not appeal to South Korea's highest court the other parts of the ruling that suspended for five years Chung's three-year prison sentence for embezzlement and ordered him to fulfill a promise last year to donate $1.1 billion of his personal assets to society.

Chung was sentenced in February to three years for breach of trust and for embezzling the equivalent of more than $100 million in company money to set up a slush fund to pay lobbyists to gain government favors.

Hyundai Motor had no comment.
