Lee County Reject Tax Increase For Schools

(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Lee County voters in urban and rural communities said a resounding no to a proposed 7-mill school tax hike yesterday. In Opelika 64 percent voted no. if approved, the revenue would have been used to build a new high school in Opelika.

Voters in Auburn rejected the tax referendum by a narrower margin 53 to 47 percent. School officials had hoped to use the money to renovate Auburn High School.

In Lee County, the largest percentage of voters 82 percent rejected the ad valorem tax hike that would have built new schools in the county.

The proposed tax would have raised about $4 million annually for the projects.
