New Bishop Chosen for Birmingham
(2007-08-14)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The Vatican announced the appointment today of Bishop Robert J. Baker of Charleston, South Carolina, as the new bishop for north Alabama.

The Diocese includes the Eternal Word Television Network, an influential Roman Catholic broadcasting operation.

Baker replaces Bishop David E. Foley, who retired in 2005 after 11 years but has remained in the position as an administrator until a successor could be named.

The 39 counties included in the Birmingham diocese have about 86,500 Catholic residents. Baker, an Ohio native, said he accepted the transfer out of faithfulness and because he wanted to remain in the South.
