McCain's Campaign Holds Up in Alabama
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Senator John McCain's Republican presidential campaign is having a tough time nationally, but it's mostly holding together in Alabama.

The large volunteer committee that McCain put together in Alabama is generally sticking with him while he reorganizes his nearly broke campaign.

State Senator Scott Beason of Gardendale has stepped aside from his role in the campaign. But most others are still with McCain including Attorney General Troy King. King says he doesn't leave friends just because they are going through tough times.

McCain's campaign is nearly broke. Over the last month, he laid off more than 50 campaign aides, including all his staff in Alabama.

Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Terry Butts of Luverne still supports the Arizona senator. But he says former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson could peel away some of McCain's support in Alabama if he enters the race.

Thompson was born in the north Alabama town of Sheffield.
