Firefighters Return to Alabama
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Ten personnel from the Alabama Forestry Commission finished their two-week detail fighting the huge, persistent wildfires in Southeast Georgia.

According to Commission spokeswoman, Coleen Vansant, all were assigned to work for the Georgia Forestry Commission under a mutual aid agreement between southern states.

The team - eight firefighters, a fire investigator and a personnel clerk - assisted in not only fighting the fires, but in helping uncover and arrest several suspect arsonists.

Vansant said fresh teams of wildland firefighters were sent Friday to replace the returning crews.

The firefighters are no strangers to dealing with disasters. They have dealt with everything from hurricane recovery to wildfires from the Gulf coast to the Plains states to the Pacific Northwest.

Georgia and Florida have been battling hundreds of wildfires over the past few weeks.
