Vanity Fair Cuts Jobs at Monroeville Plant
(2007-05-10)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Vanity Fair Brands is cutting 210 jobs from its Monroeville operations, leaving about 700 workers to run its operations.

The move comes three months after clothing manufacturer V-F Corporation sold its flagship Vanity Fair underwear line in a 350 (m) million dollar deal with Fruit of the Loom.

A Vanity spokesman said workers were informed on Monday about the cutbacks.

Vanity Fair Brands has a cutting plant, dye plant, distribution center and accounting/administrative offices in Monroeville.

Company officials said the cutting operation will move to an offshore plant over the next year, which led to the loss of jobs at the Monroeville facility.

Sandy Smith, director of the Monroeville Area Chamber of Commerce, said it's part of a disturbing trend in the apparel industry to send operations offshore.
