Senate Struggle Stalls Steel Mill Tax Breaks
(2007-05-03)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Governor Riley says time is running out for the feuding state Senate to pass tax breaks that will keep Alabama in the competition for a huge German steel mill.

The tax breaks are in position to pass in the Senate. But a stand-off between the Democratic majority and Republican minority has stalled action. Riley says senators need to forget about political parties and do what's best for the people of Alabama.

Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom Junior has been negotiating between the two sides in the Senate. He says senators realize how important this day is to the state.

Riley says he needs the tax breaks passed by the Senate well before ThyssenKrupp makes a decision on whether to build the plant in Louisiana or in southwest Alabama. The governor says that decision will be made May 11th.
