Southern Baptists Choose New President
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - A Southern Baptist missions board chose a new president nearly one year after the previous chief quit amid criticism of his management style.

Geoff Hammond was elected yesterday (Wednesday) by trustees of the North American Mission Board. He begins his new duties in May.

Hammond currently serves as a senior associate director with the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia convention.

The Reverend Robert Reccord stepped down last April.

Reccord quit following an internal probe that determined he made poor decisions in managing the agency.

Carlos Ferrer, who's chief financial officer of the board, then took over executive leadership responsibilities.

Roy Fish, a professor of evangelism at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, was later named interim president last June.

Hammond was born on the mission field to British parents who were serving in Nigeria.
