Riley Vetoes Lawmaker Pay Raise
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Governor Bob Riley vetoed a 62 percent pay raise for legislators today (Tuesday), saying he feels most people in Alabama believe the amount is "excessive."

He said he doesn't question that lawmakers, who haven't received a raise since 1991, deserve more money. But he said it should be something smaller and take effect over several years.

Riley sent his veto to the Alabama Legislature, where lawmakers could vote on overriding the veto sometime today.

Lawmakers passed the raise on March 8th by an unrecorded voice vote, but they will have to take a recorded voice vote to override the governor's veto.
