Legislature Asked to Focus on Existing Businesses
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The Legislature's special session to recruit new industries has brought up calls from legislators for Alabama to do more to keep existing industries.

Legislators said Wednesday they won't try to rewrite the governor's incentives package for new industries. But when they return next week for a new session, they will propose creation of a task force to recommend ways the state can help existing industries.

They cited the Goodyear tire plant in Gadsden as an example. Gadsden-area legislators Larry Means and Jack Page said the state must find a way to help plants that want to modernize and protect existing jobs. Alabama's incentives program is currently aimed toward new or expanding plants that will create jobs.
