Ala. Casino Developer, 2 Others Ask For Leniency
(2012-07-16)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Three men who pleaded guilty in a Statehouse bribery scheme involving gambling in Alabama are hoping for lenient sentences from a federal judge.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson heard pleas on Monday on behalf of bingo developer Ronnie Gilley; his lobbyist, Jarrod Massey; and former state Rep. Terry Spicer of Elba.

Spicer told the judge the three of them did great things in southeast Alabama that continue today. But Spicer also says he is guilty and damaged the reputation of the Legislature.

Each man pleaded guilty in a bribery conspiracy and faces years in prison. Nine other people went to trial and were acquitted by jurors.

The judge says he will impose the sentences after hearing more testimony.
