Panel OKs Kallon For Ala. Federal Judgeship
(2009-11-20)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - Birmingham lawyer Abdul Kallon has moved a step closer to replacing Alabama's first black federal judge.

The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday by unanimous consent approved the nomination of the 40-year-old Kallon to replace Clemon, who retired.

President Barrack Obama's nomination of Kallon now goes to the full Senate for a vote. Kallon is a native of Sierre Leone and is a former law clerk for Clemon. He is a partner and practices labor and employment law in the Birmingham law firm Bradley Arant Boult Cummings.

Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama is a member of the Judiciary Committee and supported Kallon's nomination.
