State Seeks Execution Date For Thomas Whisenhant
(2009-11-17)
(APR - Alabama Public Radio ) - The state Attorney General's Office is seeking an execution date for Alabama's longest serving death row inmate, Thomas Whisenhant.

Assistant Attorney General Clay Crenshaw says a motion will be filed Tuesday asking the Alabama Supreme Court to set an execution date for the 62-year-old Whisenhant.

The request comes a day after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Whisenhant's appeal of his conviction for the Oct. 16, 1976 abduction, rape and murder of Mobile convenience store clerk Cheryl Lynn Payton. Court records show Whisenant left her body in a remote area and later returned and mutilated the body.

Whisenhant also was accused of killing two other convenience store clerks in the Mobile area.
